Progress Report

So, for all you Jammers, how's it going? Have you got your ideas in a row and some words down? Researching? All done? I'm in the slog in the middle where you start to try to pull the thing in the direction of a conclusion. Trying to figure out a good voice for this has been a bit of a struggle, so I'm trying to go easy on it.

  1. I'm about a third of the way through. I've done one burst of real writing so far, along with some research and general outlining. (Coming up with names is annoying!) I'm no author, so this is going to be interesting. (=

I've settled on a journal format for some reason, not sure if that's lazy or not. I feel like some of the characters I've introduced are predictable, but I also feel like that's okay (the "they wouldn't be stereotypes if there wasn't some truth in them" justification). (=

    1. My style came out a bit more historical than narrative. I don't think making it like a journal is lazy at all, as long as you can write it well from the perspective of the characters.

I think for next week's I'm going to have to make sure I come up with something that actually has characters and narrative, though.

  2. I've finished up my first draft and a rough editing pass. Anybody want to do a trade before the deadline to check over consistency and grammatical errors and such?

  3. Sounds like you two are having a much better time right now. I started with an idea that seems neat. But it's all info dump. So, I'm restarting with the story from a different perspective. Not sure if I'm going the same way with it, though.

I'm going to keep plugging away, but I fear that this one might be a bust for me.

    1. Hope you have some luck! If you need anybody to bounce an idea off of, let me know!

    2. For what it's worth, I had a tough time ripping out all the incidental detail I got from research, too. So much neat stuff I had to just hack away.

  4. I've just now managed to get time to write without being distracted by other influences (this past weekend was LoL Season 3's LCS qualifiers... I had to watch!)

...got about 1/3 of the story done. It's coming out a bit more...matter-of-fact and less "This is an action story" than I had originally intended, but my entire plot changed when I discovered there was no full moon at the Battle of Chancellorsville, which my mind would not forgive and claim poetic license for.

  5. So, I spent the first few days researching and batting around how I wanted to approach it. Spent the next night learning Scrivener, because I need to. Figured I'd kill two birds with one stone and all.
I then spent the last couple days petrified and anxious, because I haven't written anything that wasn't in script form in forever.
I spent yesterday resigned to the fact that I wasn't going to have anything worth a damn.
But I fought through my anxiety and just spewed out what i had written in my head. It's ugly and rough and unfinished, but I'm going to revisit it and make it not suck.
